The Future of LCD TV’s

LCD (liquid-crystal display) television sets are considered to be the cutting-edge in market-available television technology.
They’re relatively low-energy but high-performance, providing a crystal-clear display that allows the latest movies and video games to look like they’re actually happening in your home.
But we all know that technology changes quickly these days. If you have an original iPhone then you’re eating the dust of millions of others who have advanced beyond your caveman-like understanding of smart phone technology. And that’s just the progress of a few years! So let’s take a look at LCD TVs and see if they’re destined to the same fate as cellular phones, or if they’re here to stay for a while.
The Continued Success of Plasma Television
Why not lament over the death of the LCD TV already? After all, we feel old today; why not just pile on the bad news? Well, the truth is that the older TVs are still going strong. In fact, one of the technologies that LCD can be considered a threat to, the Plasma TV, is still riding strong sales and looking like there’s room for growth, as InAVate reports, saying:
The growth is against a backdrop of weak economic conditions which forced some vendors out of the market in 2009. Furthermore plasma has faced a renewed threat from LCD TVs with improvements in LED backlights.
That’s not a bad performance considering the ever-expanding and ever-cheapening world of television these days. With LCD TV’s still considered a threat to plasma, you know that LCDs probably aren’t going anywhere soon. But that’s not to say LCDs won’t one day be obsolete - heck, even technology has to wrestle with its own mortality. Let’s take a look in our crystal ball and see if we can discern what the future of television - and threats to the LCD - might look like.
LED TVs: When One Letter Means a Big Difference
It’s hard to deny that one of the big trends these days is power-saving and generally living a clean, or “green” lifestyle. The idea behind a “green” lifestyle is that you can help keep the Earth alive and green by reducing your environmental impact. Few people think about the environmental impact of their television sets, but that could be set to change with technology like LED TVs hitting the market.
The LCD TV has a distinct advantage: it’s relatively low-power to maintain, which not only means it costs less to keep running but it has a lesser impact on your energy consumption, which subsequently has an impact on energy companies, which obviously have an impact on the environment. It’s not the most direct connection out there, but every little bit helps.
As SmartHouse Australia reports, flat-panel television sets like LCD and LED TVs use less energy than even plasma models, which might help explain how both LED and LCD TVs are considered a threat to the world of plasma.
An advantage of LCD TVs is that new LED technology often works in union with LCD in order to create the lighting for the liquid-crystal displays we’re becoming so familiar with. This means that the technology is still evolving with the LCD - not necessarily past it. As far as mainstream television sales go, the LCD TV is still on the cutting edge.
What does this mean for you? Well, it means that you won’t feel like you’ve instantly bought an obsolete TV the minute you bring home a liquid-crystal display. Instead, you’ll probably feel like you’ve made a good decision, and you should: LCD is one of the best and most efficient ways you can view programming in the comfort of your own home. Sure, your kids may not grow up and buy an LCD TV of their own - unless the technology really sticks - but for now, LCD is where it’s at.
